About the Edith Farnsworth House
Edith Farnsworth House Historic Site is located along the Fox River, about 90 minutes southwest of downtown Chicago. Commissioned in 1945 by Dr. Edith Farnsworth and designed by the office of Mies van der Rohe, the house was constructed between 1949-51 and is an exemplary representation of International Style and the modern movement’s desire to juxtapose restrained architecture with organic nature. Mies constructed the house of “almost nothing” for Dr. Farnsworth as a country retreat from her busy medical practice in Chicago. From 1972‐2003, the house served as a summer home for Lord Peter Palumbo who then sold it to the National Trust for Historic Preservation with a preservation and conservation easement by Landmarks Illinois. Since opening to the public in 2004, more than 150,000 visitors have toured the house and surrounding 60 acres.
